Southeast Florida Action Network (SEAFAN)
Kristi Kerrigan, Reef Resilience Coordinator
The Southeast Florida Action Network (SEAFAN) is a reporting and response system designed to improve the protection and management of southeast Florida’s coral reefs by enhancing marine debris clean-up efforts, increasing response to vessel groundings and anchor damage, and providing early detection of potentially harmful biological disturbances. One of the three programs SEAFAN supports is the Southeast Florida Marine Debris Reporting and Removal Program (MDP) which encourages local divers and dive shops to report marine debris they observe, remove small debris on a regular basis, and participate in reef clean-up events that are organized to remove accumulated debris. By increasing awareness and improving reporting and cleanup efforts, the marine debris program seeks to minimize the impacts of marine debris on coral reefs. Since its inception in 2012, SEAFAN has received a total of 32 marine debris reports and through removal efforts within the MDP, removed a total of 2,530 pounds of debris. SEAFAN will continue to provide a mechanism for citizens to report marine debris and other reef related issues.
