FWC Trap Retrieval Programs
Pamela Gruver, Biological Scientist IV
Florida has three major trap fisheries (spiny lobster, stone crab, and blue crab), and traps may become lost or abandoned. Derelict traps are a problem because they can impact marine life, the environment, and public safety. FWC contracts with commercial fishers during the closed season to remove derelict traps. This program has resulted in the removal of approximately 5,000 traps annually.
