Broward Tire Reefs
Pat Quinn, Broward County
During the early 1970s, hundreds of thousands of tires were dumped offshore of Broward County to create an artificial reel in an effort to enhance fisheries. Over time, strapping that bound the tires together failed resulting in the majority of the tires becoming lose and able to be moved around by current and wave action. Many of the tires have come to rest on the adjacent coral reefs resulting in damage to this sensitive habitat. A partnership between Broward County, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and various federal agencies have resulted in the removal of almost 200,000 tires and removal efforts are still ongoing.
